This is the 200th anniversary of the birth of our 16th President, and whereas he and our 44th President are both Illinoisans, part of the Lincoln Douglas Debates from 1858 are playing in the background.
Although Douglas won the Illinois Legislative Senate seat, the debates previewed the issues that Lincoln would face in the 1860 presidential election.
The main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery.
